At Bienenberg, regionality and Fairtrade are not seen as a trend, but as the logical consequence of responsible consumption.
Enjoyment does not necessarily have to be associated with regional products.
It may be that some foods that have matured here taste better than goods imported from far away. First and foremost, however, we respect our creation by using regional and sustainably produced food. Furthermore, it is a commitment to our location and to local producers, who have a much longer spit than those across the border. It's about short transportation routes, jobs and the branch we are sitting on.
More than half of the electricity we consume is produced by the photovoltaic system on our roofs. The rest of the electricity we buy is 100% natural electricity from renewable energy sources.
The heat for our hotel rooms and hot water comes from our pellet heating system, which supplies the entire Bienenberg via a small heating network. The system is supplemented by individual boilers with 100% natural electricity. Only a small part of the heat is produced by the existing oil heating system in the hotel to bridge outages or peak times.
Anyone ordering tap water at the Bienenberg restaurant will receive a carafe of fresh Bienenberg water from the restaurant's own spring for 3.00 francs. The proceeds are passed on in full.
Together with the organization Water for Water (WfW), we support water and education projects in Zambia.
In other words, we are exporting some of this precious commodity to regions in need.
One in 7 people today still has no access to clean drinking water. That must give us pause for thought.
With WfW, we can set an example for sustainable consumption and raise awareness that drinking water is not a matter of course, but a great privilege.
